SMC Membership

   To join SMC with a credit card, click on the shopping cart below. To pay by check, send us your payment and make the check payable to SMC. Our postal address is SMC, P.O. Box 1642, New York, NY 10028. To contact SMC, you can send an e-mail to smc-office@pipeline.com.

Annual Membership in SMC includes

• a Membership Directory for your area and the name of the local contact persons nearest to you;
• a Resource Packet containing resources for donor insemination and adoption and a Literature Packet of articles about single mothers by choice;
• a one-year subscription to our quarterly newsletter;
• the option of registering in our Sibling Registry for children conceived by anonymous donor insemination;
• participation in our private e-mail lists.

The fee for National Membership is $55 for the first year and includes a newsletter subscription. Renewal fees are lower: see below for a link to them. There are a limited number of partial scholarships available to those with financial need. Some local chapters may have additional fees. Your membership materials will be sent to you promptly by first class mail. Please note: membership in SMC is limited to single women who are or will be raising their children alone..

Newsletter Subscription

   You can join SMC as a Newsletter Subscriber (do not order if you have already become a member as the newsletter is included) by clicking on the shopping cart below. An annual subscription entitles you to four issues of our newsletter, the name of the local contact persons nearest to you, and participation in our e-mail lists.

   Our quarterly newsletter is a means of networking with other members and sharing information and experiences. It also includes news of interest to our members.

A subscription (four issues) is included at no charge with membership or can be ordered separately for $25.00.

Newsletter Back Issues

Newsletter back issues may be purchased for $3.00 each. You will receive an order form along with your membership package, but you may also request an order form via e-mail or phone. You can see a partial list of back issues on the newsletter page.

E-mail Lists (for our members)

Lists of general interest to all of our members:

• SMC-News for SMC-related media and other news and adoption and/or birth announcements.
• SMC-Community is a central gathering place for all of our members, and discusses general SMC issues not covered by the 'ages and stages' groups.
  (We encourage everyone to join these lists.)

There are other special-purpose lists:

• SMC-Adopt for discussion of the adoption process and parenting an adopted child.
• SMC-Thinking for discussion of deciding whether or not to become an SMC.
• SMC-TTC for discussion of the process of trying to conceive and pregnancy.
• SMC-IF for discussion of long-term infertility issues.
• SMC-Preg for discussion of pregnancy.
• SMC-Intl for discussion of issues of interest to our members outside of N America.

And there are age/grade-related lists for discussion of practical parenting issues:

• SMC-LittleOnes for discussion of parenting children from birth to preschool.
• SMC-SchoolAge for discussion of parenting children in grades K-5.
• SMC-MiddleSchool for discussion of parenting middle school children, grades 6-8.
• SMC-Senior for discussion of parenting children in grades 9 and up.

Thinkers Workshops

   Several times a year we offer an all-day workshop in New York City for women who are considering single motherhood ("thinkers"). The goal of the workshop is to help each participant clarify her concerns so she can ultimately make a decision that is right for her.

    If you are considering single motherhood, we encourage you to join SMC. More than half of our members are thinkers and tryers, and the organization can provide you with a unique network of support and information while you are going through this very important decision-making process. When you join SMC, we will automatically send you information about the Thinker's Workshop along with your membership materials.

The fee for the Thinkers Workshop is $50 (not included in the membership fee). There is a waiting list for the NYC workshops but several of our local chapters have activities that focus on the needs of thinkers, so we recommend that you first join the SMC National organization and then check on what is available locally before you sign up for this workshop.
